4/19/10 - Update

Ava was an emaciated, heart worm positive boxer girl who was destined to die in a North Carolina gas shelter. All the rescues down south passed on rescuing her. One of the local NC rescues contacted me and asked if I could help. She sent me some pictures of Ava and it was really sad. She was so skinny you could clearly see her back and rib bones and she was covered with scars all over her legs and paws. She probably has had several litters of puppies in her short life. She is estimated to be 3 years old but looks more like a 6 year  old dog. It was clear to see this poor dog has had a really hard life. When I looked at the photos all I could see were her beautiful brown eyes and I could not let her die without knowing what love and kindness was. I asked the shelter to pull her. The woman at the shelter asked "Did you see her photos are you sure you want to pull her?" and I told her yes. She was sent to a local vet because she could barely stand where she stayed for a week to gain some strength. I was so lucky that a kind pilot right here out on Long Island agreed to go pick up Ava from NC on Saturday and bring her back to New York. When they took her off the plane and I saw her I wanted to cry. She was so so skinny and weak but she managed to wag her little nubby ..actually her whole body wiggled she almost fell down. She was finally safe and in a warm home and you could see how grateful she was.

Please help us continue to care for Ava and to care for her new puppies by sponsoring a puppy for $50 and choosing his or her name.

Ava was found to be pregnant when we rescued her.  She gave birth to 9 puppies on April 1st.  Mom and pups are doing well.

 3/7/10 -

Sweet Sweet Ava was found as a stray and picked up with six other dogs on the streets of NC and brought to a shelter. A volunteer at the shelter contacted AABR to help Ava because no one else was interested in helping her. Once I saw those beautiful brown eyes, I knew this sweet girl deserved a chance. A kind pilot from Pilot N Paws flew Ava to New York so she could get the help she needed.

Based on her condition and scars, Ava has experienced little human kindness, but her little nub never stopped wagging when I met her. Ava is very sweet, timid and extremely thin. She needs to gain weight before she can be spayed and treated for heart worms. She has a long way to go before she is finally healthy and ready for the loving home she truly deserves. Please help Ava by sponsoring her today!!

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please first read our Adoption Procedure, by clicking on the link at the top of this page, then fill out an online application.

Boxers and Applicants are not matched on a first come, first served basis. Not all applications are approved. On average, it takes between a week and 1 month to adopt a Rescue Boxer to an approved applicant, depending on your personal circumstances and flexibility.

Matching Boxers suitable for placement with younger children, other dogs, cats, and special needs, yours and theirs, increases the application review time and adoption time.

And yes, we realize that the Boxer you may have your heart set on, may be adopted before you're approved.   Should your first choices all ready found their forever home, we want you to advise us as to other dogs you are interested in at Adoptions@AdoptABoxerRescue.com .  Or let us suggest a few that we feel will match your home.  That is what we are good at.   And be happy for the ones that have been placed... and know that there are way too many fantastic dogs waiting in their place.

Our non-profit organization is wholly comprised of hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing our wonderful Boxers placed in loving, permanent homes and given another chance for a happy life. Our process may seem slow, but if you are patient, we will try to provide you with a devoted, loving companion - a Boxer.

We hope you feel that the right Boxer is worth waiting for.
