Adopt A Boxer Rescue promotes the need for active participation of owners in the training of their dogs.

In are increasing attempt to try and prevent more dogs from becoming strays or being surrendered due to behavior issues, AABR supports the need for owners to become active partners in their dog's training.  AABR hosts training events from time to time in our area, and will also post other training events that we feel will assist our efforts towards this goal.

Please bookmark this page and stop by often to see what we are doing.

Sproutfest! Sponsored by Finding Shelter Animal Rescue
Sunday, November 14 · 12:00pm - 3:00pm
West Goshen Community Park, West Chester, PA
Finding Shelter Animal Rescue began on January 1, 2010 as a no-kill rescue for dogs and cats. Finding Shelter was inspired by our dog named Sprout, a blind Chihuahua who was abandoned on the side of the road in November, 2009. Sprout was sick and afraid and was expected to live only two, short weeks. He has quite a bit of fight in him for such a small guy and on November 14, 2010 we will celebrate 1 year with Sprout in our lives. He is our own little miracle. To celebrate this great milestone, we're holding a super-adoption event in honor of Sprout’s anniversary. Please come out and celebrate with us!

The head studies are done in fabrics depicting fawn, brindle, and white Boxers, in both cropped and natural ears.  This is truly an exceptionally beautiful quilt and any Boxer lover would be delighted to have it for their own.

AABR Benefit Golf Tournament

On Saturday, June 12th, AABR will hold their third annual benefit golf tournament!  This tournament is being held to raise funds so that AABR can continue to help save the lives of homeless boxers!  AABR is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of abandoned, unwanted and sick boxers through out the east coast.

Everyone is invited to participate in the golf tournament!  The tournament will be held at Briarwood Golf Course (East) located at 4775 West Market Street, York, PA 17408.  Registration begins at 11am and a shotgun start is planned for noon.  The cost is $75 per player and includes a light lunch, 18 holes of golf, cart, dinner, drinks and many fabulous prizes!

We are also requesting help from local businesses.  We are asking for prize donations for the raffles we will be having.  Donations can be anything from a gift certificate from a local restaurant, pet store, salon, spa, etc., to an item donated that can be used as a raffle prize during the golf tournament.

Businesses can also sponsor a hole for $100 (one sign) or choose to be a major sponsor for $500 (two signs and golf for a team of four).  The business name will be placed on a sign at a hole on the course during play, letting everyone know that the business cares about the community and has made a sizable donation.

If you would like to participate in the tournament, make a donation, or sponsor a hole, please contact Bonnie or Todd Rohrbaugh at 717-235-9110 or 717-515-3025 or by email to brohrbaugh@wildblue.net.   Donations and registration forms, along with payment (payable to Adopt A Boxer Rescue), should be mailed to:  Bonnie Rohrbaugh, 1014 Hain Road, New Freedom, PA  17349.  Registration forms with payment should be received by June 1st, 2010.

Spots are filling up quickly so please send your registration forms in soon!  Your help is greatly appreciated!  With your help, we can continue to save these wonderful dogs.  Thank you!

Everyone is invited to participate in the golf tournament!  The tournament will be held at Briarwood Golf Course (East) located at 4775 West Market Street, York, PA 17408.  Registration begins at 11am and a shotgun start is planned for noon.  The cost is $75 per player and includes 18 holes of golf, cart, dinner, drinks and many fabulous prizes!

July 12th -  Broadway Barks 10!
Saturday, July 12, 3:30 PM
Shubert Alley, west of Broadway btwn. 44th and 45th Sts., Manhattan
This annual fundraiser and pet adopt-athon, hosted as always by Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore, usually draws thousands of theater fans, pet lovers, and a whole bunch of animal-friendly Broadway stars. Best of all, the event raises money for all the city's animal shelters and rescues like ours, and helps out lots of homeless pets. Details on this year's Broadway Barks are below:

Peters Will Sign "Broadway Barks" Prior to Broadway Barks 10 on July 12

By Andrew Gans
09 Jun 2008

Two-time Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters will autograph copies of her best-selling children's tome, "Broadway Barks," July 12 at 12:30 PM at the Broadhurst Theatre.

Peters' new tome

The book signing at the Broadhurst (235 West 44th Street) will precede the tenth annual Broadway Barks! dog and cat adopt-a-thon in Shubert Alley, which is scheduled from 3:30-6:30 PM in Shubert Alley (located between 44th and 45th Streets, between Broadway and Eighth Avenue).

Celebrity presentations of pets from citywide animal shelters will take place beginning at 5:3 PM. A list of celebs taking part in the event will be announced at a later date.

The annual adopt-a-thon was created by pals Peters and Mary Tyler Moore — who will again co-host this year's event — to find homes for pets from city animal shelters. In a statement Moore said, "This year we're delighted to welcome two more shelters to our Broadway Barks family, Arf and Save Kitty, and according to recent statistics, we learned that we are making a difference. In 2002, the rate of euthanasia among shelter animals was at 70%. We are proud that as a result of our efforts, in 2007, the number is down to 43%."

Peters, who adopted her dogs, Kramer and Stella, from the ASPCA and AC&C, added, "Our work is bringing us closer to the day when we will no longer have to euthanize any healthy and treatable homeless cats and dogs because of a lack of space. As a community, we are most effective in helping animals when we pool our strengths to achieve what is, after all, a shared goal — the elevation and continued welfare of animals in our society."

The adopt-a-thon will feature a sampling of pets from several New York City animal shelters and adoption agencies, including A Cause for Paws, Adopt A Boxer Rescue, Animal Haven, Anjellicle Cats Rescue, ASPCA, AC&C, BARC, Bide-A-Wee, Bobbi & the Strays, City Critters, Humane Society of New York, Husky House, Kitty Kind, Long Island Greyhound Rescue, Loving Touch, Metropolitan Maltese Rescue, Mid Atlantic Great Dane Rescue, NYC Siamese Rescue, Pet-I-Care, PLUTO, Russell Refuge, Staten Island Council for Animal Welfare, Stray from the Heart, Tigger Foundation, Arf and Save Kitty.

The afternoon event, sponsored by the ASCPA and Pedigree Food for Dogs, will also feature an auction of celebrity-autographed memorabilia. Proceeds from the auction and other donations received during the day will benefit the shelters and organizations attending Broadway Barks 10.

For more information call (212) 840-0770, ext. 477, or visit www.BroadwayBarks.com.

*Peters will also offer a reading from "Broadway Barks," a performance of "Kramer's Song" and a signing at the Barnes & Noble Lincoln Square in Manhattan June 12. The free event, which is open to the public, is scheduled for 10 AM-12 noon.

Peters' "Broadway Barks," which features illustrations by Liz Murphy, was released in late April on the Blue Apple Books label and boasts a CD featuring a lively reading of the story by Peters and a lovely song ("Kramer's Song") penned by the Tony-winning Annie Get Your Gun and Song & Dance star. The charming children's book, the tale of a down-on-his-luck, yet scrappy dog Kramer, benefits Broadway Barks, the charitable organization co-founded by Peters and good friend Mary Tyler Moore over a decade ago.

November 15th, 2007 - See Flyer - Tips for the Boxers!  Thank You!!!!!

"My husband & I own a bar & grille in Bethlehem, PA & we thought it was a great place to host an adopt a boxer rescue event. We're planning it for Thursday, November 15th in the evening. The bartender (myself) & server are going to donate all of our tips from that night to boxer rescue. We are a smaller neighborhood bar (we legally seat about 60) but it will still help. And it will be nice to educate people on the benefits of adopting rather than buying a pup from a breeder or pet store. And Dawn said a volunteer or two in my area will come out with info & a couple adoptable dogs which will definitely boost donations."

SHUBERT ALLEY GOES TO THE  DOGS (AND CATS!) WITH BROADWAY  BARKS 9!   A STAR-STUDDED DOG  AND CAT ADOPT-A-THON IN SHUBERT ALLEY   SATURDAY,  JULY 14 - 3:30 PM -  6:30 PM

BERNADETTE PETERS AND MARY TYLER MOORE AND SUCH BROADWAY FRIENDS AS:

Angela Lansbury, Harry Hamlin, Lisa Rinna, David Hyde Pierce, Jo Anne  Worley, Jerry Mathers, Jane Carr, John Lloyd Young, Maureen McGovern,  Cheyenne Jackson, Michael Cerveri,  Debra Monk, and Karen Ziemba and  many more Broadway Stars To Appear In Special Benefit For New York  City Animal Shelters And Adoption Agencies

Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore will host the ninth annual BROADWAY  BARKS!, a star-studded dog and cat adopt-a-thon benefiting New York City  animal shelters and adoption agencies. The event, produced by Broadway  Care/Equity Fights AIDS and sponsored by the ASPCA with additional  sponsorship by the New York Times, Pedigree, and RCA Small Wonder will  take place on Saturday, July 14th in Shubert Alley (located between 44th  and 45th Streets, between Broadway and Eighth Avenue). The festivities  begin at 3:30 p.m.; celebrity presentations of pets from citywide animal  shelters will take place between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. (In the event of rain,  BROADWAY BARKS 9! will be rescheduled for Saturday, July 28 from 3:30p.m.  - 6:30p.m.)

Back by "pawpular" demand, BROADWAY BARKS 9! will help many of New York  City's shelter animals find permanent homes by informing New Yorkers about  the plight of the thousands of "homeless" dogs and cats in the  metropolitan area. Last year's BROADWAY BARKS! attracted an audience of  more than 6,000 theater fans, pet owners, and animal lovers, and featured  the participation of more than 24 animal shelters from the New York City  area.

"In 2006, for the first time in New York City's history, the euthanasia  rate for dogs and cats in the city's Animal Care & Control shelters fell  below 50%. A total of 20, 581 animals were placed into homes. 9,313 were  adopted; 9,937 were transferred for eventual adoption to local shelters  and rescue groups; and 1,331 were returned to their owners," said Moore.

"This milestone means we are saving more than half of the dogs and cats in  our city shelters," said Ed Sayres, president & CEO of the ASPCA. "We are  are proud that New York City's efforts to save the lives of adoptable  animals has reached this important benchmark."

Peters, who adopted her dogs, Kramer and Stella, from the ASPCA and AC&C,  adds, "It's bringing us closer to the day when we will no longer have to  euthanize any healthy and treatable homeless cats and dogs because of a  lack of space. As a community, we are most effective in helping animals  when we pool our strengths to achieve what is, after all, a shared goal --  the elevation and continued welfare of animals in our society."

A galaxy of Broadway stars will join Peters and Moore for this special  benefit, presenting the animals for adoption. Celebrity presenters include  Angela Lansbury (Deuce); Harry Hamlin and Lisa Rinna (Chicago); David Hyde  Pierce, Jason Danieley, Michael McCormick, Debra Monk, and Karen Ziemba  (Curtains); Jerry Mathers and Paul Vogt (Hairspray), Priscilla Lopez and  Mandy Gonzalez (In the Heights); Cheyenne Jackson and Kerry Butler (Xanadu);  Michael Cerveris (LoveMusik); Jo Anne Worley, John Glover, Beth Leavel,  Gerry Vichi and Patrick Wetzel (The Drowsy Chaperone); Ashley Brown, Jane  Carr, Daniel Jenkins, and Gavin Lee (Mary Poppins); John McMartin and  Maureen Moore (Grey Gardens); Michael Berresse (A Chorus Line); John Earl  Jelks (Radio Golf); Michael Mulheren (Deuce); J. Block; Maureen McGovern; and  many more.

BROADWAY BARKS 9! will feature a sampling of potential pets from several  New York City animal shelters and adoption agencies, including A Cause for  Paws, Adopt A Boxer Rescue, Angelical Cat, Animal Haven, ASPCA, AC&C, BARC,  Bide-A-Wee, Bobbi & the Strays, City Critters, Humane Society of New York,  Husky House, Kitty Kind, Long Island Greyhound Rescue, Loving Touch,  Metropolitan Maltese Rescue, Mid Atlantic Great Dane Rescue, NYC Siamese  Rescue, Pet-I-Care, PLUTO, Russell Refuge, Staten Island Council for  Animal Welfare, Stray from the Heart, and Tigger Foundation.  Representatives from these organizations will be on hand to offer  educational information on spaying and neutering.

"no doggies please"

Thanks to Kim Barnett and the team at Follow My Lead for a wonderful, informative seminar!

On Sunday, February 18th, Kim Barnett of Follow My Lead presented another foster home/volunteer training seminar for Adopt A Boxer Rescue.  Just as the previous two, this one was equally informative and thought-provoking.  As skillful as Kim’s approach and teachings are, her methods are quite basic and simple to understand and apply.  She teaches humans to better understand and communicate with their dogs and the importance of being the pack leader.  Ivor, her right hand man, is a perfect ambassador for the Boxer breed, and his contribution to the day and the seminar was especially delightful.

Those who attend Kim’s seminars come away with a much better insight on how to understand and live a happier life with their dog, whether there is one dog, or multiple dogs, in the home.  Kim has a love for boxers but of course her expertise is not limited to this breed.  Kim is an outstanding behaviorist and trains all breeds.

We, at Adopt a Boxer Rescue, feel very fortunate and grateful for all the commitment and assistance Kim and her Follow My Lead team has shown Adopt A Boxer Rescue.

Kim will be hosting another seminar for AABR in the Shrewsbury, PA area on March 18th.  Set that day aside and see the events page for details.

Foster Home Training Seminar Feb 18, 2007
A message from Kim Barnett:
As the next AABR seminar draws closer, once again I'm filled with excitement at the prospect of meeting and connecting with more people and making new friends from this tremendous organization. One of the aims of the day is to promote and encourage people to foster, though adopters and anyone with a real interest in making the lives of dogs better is also welcome. This will be our third seminar together in just a few months and the enthusiasm in this group just keeps growing; my desire to share information is only surpassed by your thirst for knowledge: we are truly creating the ripple effect and I'm filled with pride in every volunteer.  Rescue can be daunting, but together we are proving that over and above placing dogs in forever homes, we can offer real help in making the transition and rehabilitation for these dogs and their people a much more fulfilling experience, leading to fewer dogs coming back into rescue.

Winter is finally upon us, so please drive with care to the seminar. Light snow is forecast so allow extra time and if you think you'll be late, just call in and let us know, we'll keep track of you!

The team at Follow My Lead looks forward to a great day with you on Sunday,
                                                                                    Kim

Looking forward to seeing you!

You are cordially invited to be the guests of Adopt A Boxer Rescue on Sunday, December 10, 2006, between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM, for a valuable and informative foster home training seminar on canine behavior.  Well known trainer Kim Barnett from England, of Follow My Lead, will explore pack dynamics and how being a good leader benefits the dogs we love and care for.

Foster homes and adoptive homes thinking about adding a member to the pack, as well as transporters, etc., will benefit from Kim’s knowledge and experience and her clear and concise presentation.  After attending a recent seminar of Kim’s in PA, it was apparent that we could benefit from Kim’s skills on Long Island.

The seminar is free, the information invaluable, and Kim makes it all very interesting and fun.

Currently the location of the seminar is planned for western Suffolk County, Long Island, NY,(exact location is subject to change should the seating exceed capacity.)

Please email us if you would like to attend and we will finalize the location and give you the details.

Of course we are always looking for new foster homes, so if you have been looking at our available dogs page and wondering if you could do it, this is the time to learn what fostering is about.  First come first serve, subject to seating capacity.  Must register in advance.

Friends and Broadway Barks co-creators Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore will return as hosts for the event, which begins at 3:30 PM. The celebrity presentation of pets from New York City animal shelters is scheduled to begin at 5:30 PM.

Those who have recently agreed to be part of the event include Gary Beach, Christian Borle, John Treacy Egan, Sutton Foster, Jenn Gambatese, Crystal Hunt, Beth Leavel, Nellie McKay, Judy McLane, Bebe Neuwirth, Kate Reinders, Angie Schworer, Josh Strickland, Russell Tovey, Jacob Young and the cast of Tails: The Musical. In a statement, co-host Moore said, "It’s hard to believe that we are celebrating the eighth season of Broadway Barks! Throughout the years, it has become a beloved Shubert Alley tradition and a highly-anticipated event in the theatre community. It is extremely gratifying to know that so many lovable pets will find homes thanks to the many enthusiastic theatre fans and animal lovers who attend Broadway Barks! each year."

Two-time Tony winner Peters added, "Mary and I are extremely pleased by the continued success of Broadway Barks! It is rewarding to know that we are saving animals’ lives and fostering a spirit of community among animal shelters and rescue groups throughout the city."

Produced by Broadway Care/Equity Fights AIDS, the event will feature pets from numerous Manhattan animal shelters and adoption agencies, including A Cause for Paws, Adopt A Boxer Rescue, Angelical Cat, Animal Haven, ASPCA, AC&C, BARC, Bid-A-Wee, Bobbi & the Strays, City Critters, Humane Society of New York, Husky House, Kitty Kind, Long Island Greyhound Rescue, Loving Touch, Manhattan Valley Cat, Metropolitan Maltese Rescue, Mid Atlantic Great Dane Rescue, NYC Siamese Rescue, Pet-I-Care, PLUTO, Russell Refuge, Staten Island Council for Animal Welfare, Stray from the Heart and Tigger Foundation.

Hi All!

This is TJ, and me and Maggie made it to Broadway on Saturday!  Broadway Barks, that is...

We had a great time, gave out a lot of kisses, and even went on stage with Harvey Fierstein!   Can you believe that!  Maggie was a big hit with Harvey because her foster Mom painted her toenails puppy pink, and that was the first thing Mr Fierstein noticed when he saw us.

That's him in the picture pointing to Maggie's Toes saying "look - she's got pink toenails - she's got pink toenails!!!"

Big stars like Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters were there.  I don't remember their TV shows.  I don't think I was born yet... But they were sure nice ladies to help all us guys find homes and raise money so that more of us can be helped.

I  think the best part of the day though, was when I got to go home with my new foster parents.  I'm now in a nice home, with a foster brother and sister!

Things are starting to look up for me.  Just thought you'd like to know.

Love to all,

TJ

T u n e  I n ! ! ! ! !

Adopt A Boxer Rescue volunteer Karen from PA, was on FOX News Thursday, Dec 2nd, at 8am to promote Adopt A Boxer Rescue!

It was filmed at Braxton's in Wayne PA

Adopt A Boxer Rescue Awareness!!!!

Well, it was an adventure!  Jenn and I arrived at 6:20 AM.  We had one spot at 7:41 and one at about 8 ish.  We filled Rich Britton in on what we do as volunteers for AABR and who each of the dogs are and what's their story.

Jenn went with Max first. Cara, Buster and I was on the other side of the host, Rich.  It was great coverage.  She got to tell how to adopt, our dire need for foster homes, need for transporters and the great qualities of the Boxer.  Also, if you want a dog that is a total couch potato then don't get a Boxer.   Each segment was about 2 minutes so we got to say a lot of valuable information.

Also, said not to buy a puppy for Christmas or as a present for anyone but to adopt a dog from a rescue group.  We stressed the new web site and it was on the bottom of the screen the entire time.  The second segment was just as informative.  Each segment Max, Cara and Buster were on.  It was the first time FOX ever did it that way and they really liked this way.  In the first hour after the segment we had already 700 hits on the web site and a total of 9 new apps, 6 of which were for Buster.

I 'm sure all the hits were not from the FOX coverage but hopefully it helps get the word out about us.
